Fined $10,000 for plantains theft

ORIN Jacobs (no address given) was fined $10,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment yesterday for stealing two bunches of plantain. He pleaded guilty to simple larceny before Magistrate Alan Wilson, admitting that he committed the offence on February 15, when he stole the plantains, priced at $7,500, from Omesh Persaud.
Police Sergeant, Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant operates a stall at Stabroek Market in Georgetown and was tending to customers when the theft took place.
The prosecutor said the thief was arrested two days later and confessed to the crime.
Jacobs told the court that he had done work for Persaud and the man refused to pay him. So, he sold the ripe plantains and received $700.
The magistrate threatened to send the defendant somewhere “to get a good Mash” if he cannot pay the fine.
