Dredge owner missing in Cuyuni River boat mishap

DREDGE owner Martin Thompson is missing following a boat mishap in the Cuyuni Creek, Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) on Tuesday. Officials from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) yesterday said they are in receipt of a report of the incident, and a probe is underway.
Thompson, 34, of Lot 1856 Nutmeg Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was travelling with two other persons in a boat from Isseneru village to the Apaikwa Landing, when it encountered rough waters in the vicinity of a waterfall and capsized. The others managed to swim to safety, but Thompson, who could not swim, could not be located. Up to press time, a search for him was ongoing.

Baby killed in riverine accident
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a woman was seriously injured, and her nine-month-old baby, Sarah Simmonds, was killed when the boat in which they were travelling collided with another vessel at Matub Back Channel, Cuyuni River, at about 10:00 hours on Sunday, February 05.
Investigations have so far revealed that Sarah Simmonds was in the company of her mother Nandanie Singh, 32, and father, George Simmonds, 34, of Bartica, travelling in a boat from Aranka to Bartica, along with the captain and three other persons, when the boat collided with another vessel.
As a result, of the collision, Sarah Simmonds, Nadia Singh and George Simmonds received injuries. Sarah Simmonds was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital, while Nadia Singh and George Simmonds have been admitted to the GPHC.
