M&CC undertaking extra clean-up ahead of Mash

THE Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has pledged to do some extra cleaning in the capital, in preparation for Mashramani Day on Thursday and immediately after that celebration. Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Ganga Persaud said he raised the clean-up issue in an engagement with the Mayor, Mr. Hamilton Green, last week, and Minister within the Ministry, Mr. Norman Whittaker had asked that a schedule of the Council’s plans be submitted.
Whittaker told the Guyana Chronicle, by telephone yesterday, that he was about to call and remind City Hall about the requested submission.
Councillor Patricia Chase-Green, who is performing the duties of Deputy Mayor, told this newspaper, also on the telephone, that the Council, usually, undertakes extra cleaning before and after Mash.
She said the Council is to do so at the Indian Monument, between North Road and Church Street, on Camp Street, because that is an assembly point on Mash Day.
Similar work will also be done along the route to the National Park and patching on some parts.
Ms. Chase-Green said each vendor is asked to have a garbage bag for the Council to collect, instead of having to pick up the same waste from the streets.
She estimated the cost of the clean-up immediately after Mash in the vicinity of $300,000.
