Hindus observe Maha Shivraatri today

THE Hindu world will be enveloped in chanting and meditation during the observance of Maha Shiva Raatri today. The following is an explaination of the significance of Maha Shivraatri by President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud.

Maha Shiva Raatri commemorates Bhagwan Shiva’s descent in the world and is recorded as the only deity who is worshipped both as Nirgun and Sagun. Bhagwan Shiva is the central theme in Hindu adoration and as such Maha Shivraatri is regarded as the most powerful spiritual occasion observed on Chatrudasi in the month of Phalgun.

Tulsisdas’s Ramcharitmanas identifies major aspects of Bhagwan Shankar. Notwithstanding, the various incarnations, there is no suggestion that a multitude of Gods are worshipped. We uncompromisingly submit that Hindus worship one God. The Murti of Shiva demonstrates his majestic symbols which have profound spiritual significance.

ESHAWARA SARVA BHUTAH NANG
Shiva’s Trisul or Trident emphasizes that our revered Shankar Bhagwan is in command of the three mighty gunas – Satwic, rajasic and tamasic. The Lingam connotes Nirakar Eshwara and the Trident Sovereignty.

I seize the opportunity to state that Shiva is the only deity in the Hindu legacy who is adored both as personal and impersonal. Shiva is therefore the infinite God who can be aptly described as omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresence. The prescription to worship Shiva takes into account the many dimensions which He reflects.

I think it is opportune to state that Hindus are not idolaters. From time immemorial it is recognized and acknowledged that the murtis are no more than symbols.

Parvati the spouse of Shiva is a paragon of beauty, virtue and the source of intellectual alertness.  Shiva is Shakta and Parvati is Shakti. When these two are fused the spiritual momentum advances and meditation becomes more profound. It is based on these considerations that we unequivocally reject any suggestions that the world will soon end but we advance the logical theory that the Gods and Goddess will remove all inhibitions and open the doors which will guide us to the heavenly realm.

It is expected therefore that you observe the day with profound discipline. Keep vrat and chant the Panchakshaar mantra – Om  Namaha  Shivay.

Special Satsangh will be held at Rama Krishna Mandir, Barr Street, Kitty at 6:00 pm and Shri Krishna Mandir, Seaforth Street, Campbellville at 7:00 pm. There will also be special satsangh at the Cove and John Ashram commencing at 5:30 am today, where thousands of devotees join in the annual pilgrimage to the Ashram on this very auspicious day.
All are invited.
