At Mash Competitions…

Children go to town with calypso and dramatic poetry
CALYPSO and dramatic poetry were on show yesterday at the National Cultural Centre as the Children’s Mashramani Competition entered another day.
Yesterday’s competition saw children from nursery, primary and secondary schools levels showcasing their talent as they vied for first, second and third positions,
The day’s proceedings kicked off with interesting performances, most carrying messages about Guyana and its rich culture.
Emerging winner in the 5-7 age group, under the calypso category was Sarah Fedricks of Mainstay Lake Primary, Region 2, with a song titled ‘Lets Unite’, Regma Primary’s Erenilda De Souza walked away with second place and her song was ‘Calypso Music’. Third was Grace Charles from Vreed-en-Hoop Primary, with ‘Come and Let us Celebrate’.
Crabwook Creek Primary coming out of Region 6 was named winners of the dramatic poetry segment, after a performance
by little Aaron Gangadeen, called ‘Plantain Man’, who sent the audience wild with laughter with his piece, ‘Corentyne Plantains’.
In second place was Crystal Dookie from the Grove Primary doing ‘Parents of Today’, and third was given to Latchmie Persaud of the Tuschen Primary, and she did O’Higue.
Under the 8-7 category for the calypso competition, Tapakuma Lake Primary walked away with first place and was represented by Andre Thomas with his song, ‘Pay We teachers’.
In second place was little Maria De Souza from the Santa Rosa Primary, doing ‘My Advice to Drivers’, and taking third was Latchmansingh Primary’s Zaman Collins, doing ‘Teenage Pregnancy’.
Today the Folk song competition will continue at the National Cultural Centre, and the Children’s Road March on Saturday is scheduled for tomorrow.
