THE Guyana Police Force is responding to an article published in the Kaieteur News (yesterday) Wednesday February 15, 2012, under the caption ‘Corentyne rape victim pleads for justice’. In the article which deals with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl from Bush Lot, Corentyne, statements attributed to the girl’s relatives give the erroneous view that “the alleged rapist is walking free and the police are not arresting him” and that “the police are not doing anything. They might be taking pay-off”.
The Guyana Police Force wishes to state that the alleged rape of the teenager, which is reported to have occurred during November 2011, was reported to the police on January 27, 2012, by her mother.
The police acted promptly on the report received and commenced investigations. The suspect was arrested on the following day, January 28, 2012.
Statements have been taken in the matter and the file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions after a few remaining issues have been clarified.
In the meantime, the suspect was placed on cash bail after the 72 hours statutory detention limit had expired.
