New suspect held in Craig housewife murder probe

CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud disclosed, yesterday, that a new suspect is in custody, pending investigations into the Craig, East Bank Demerara murder of Sita Reddy. The Assistant Commissioner of Police admitted that, initially, the woman’s husband was arrested but said he was released and the man now detained is suspected to be one of three men who were seen in the victim’s yard the same day she was brutally killed.
The body of the 54-year-old housewife, of Lot 139 Second Street, Craig,  was found, on February 1, in the bottom flat of her two-storey home, with multiple stab wounds and her neck severed.
Two bedrooms in the building were ransacked but it could not be determined whether anything of value was missing and police said they are pursuing several leads. But, so far, it appears to be a robbery/murder and they are hunting three suspects.
Neighbours recalled seeing the men, who were calling out for Reddy around 14:00 hrs on February 1, when she was alone in the house.
Her husband reported that he was on his way to work when police stopped and asked him for his vehicle licence and registration certificate but, as he could not find them, he telephoned his wife so that she could look for the documents.
He, however, found the documentation under a seat in the vehicle and made several unsuccessful attempts to call her back. Not getting an answer from her, he returned home and found her dead.
Reddy sold chickens at her residence and was seen alive up to about 13:00 hrs by neighbours.
The mother of six lived with her husband and a granddaughter and had previously been robbed in March 2011 when bandits carted off with $2M in cash and jewels.
No one was charged for that crime.
