Access dams being prepared for paddy harvest
VICE-CHAIRMAN of Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Vishnu Samaroo has announced that the Regional Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department is, currently, preparing access dams within the villages of Affiance and Queenstown, on Essequibo Coast, so farmers can transport their paddy from fields to factories. He said a bulldozer, a front-end loader and other machines are being used to get the muddy, waterlogged dams in good condition for trucks and tractors and trailers.
Samaroo appealed to all rice farmers to assist in the preparation of the routes by digging outlets to drain rainfall water from pools along the way.
He also said the D&I Department and the two Water Users Associations (WUAs) will be working on a system where truckers will have to make a down payment before using the prepared roadways to fetch earth from the backlands.
The WUAs are also helping to prepare dams for the paddy harvest, Samaroo said.
