Guyana Relief Council marks 18 years of existence

–Lennox Cush donates to Glen family at GRC
THE Guyana Relief Council (GRC) located on West Public Road, Riverview, Ruimveldt, commemorated its 18 anniversary of humanitarian service on Tuesday, February 14th.
The GRC’s work has been recognized by many people locally and internationally. Tuesday’s event was graced by one of Guyana’s prominent sports personalities, cricketer Mr. Lennox Cush.
Mr. Cush, recognizing the need to contribute to the less fortunate, donated a television set, a refrigerator and a gas stove to the Glen family of Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
Cush said he was touched when he learnt of the Glen family’s mishap from a friend, and he decided to extend them a helping hand.
The Glen family’s home was demolished by a falling plum tree on January 29th, leaving them no alternative but to reside at the GRC ever since.
Mrs. Lorna Glen, along with her daughters Lisa Bardon and Lovern Austin – the mother of a three-year-old and a six-month-old — has been given top priority as it relates to care at the GRC.

PLEASANT STAY
Mrs. Lorna Glen told this newspaper that her stay at the shelter has been very pleasant, and she is quite happy. She also mentioned that the Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Ms Jenifer Webster, has promised to help her secure her own place, as she has written a letter of appeal to the Ministry of Housing, asking for assistance for the family to have their own house lot.
The house that collapsed was actually a rented property, and the landlord resides abroad. Mrs. Glen said that when the plum tree fell on the house, the entire structure collapsed, necessitating her family to seek shelter at the GRC.
Mrs. Glen said she attempted to look for another property to rent, but could not find one to suit her budget. She disclosed that she and her eldest daughter work at the Goodwood Racing Service in Georgetown, and their expenditure is minimal.
The Glen family has expressed sincerest gratitude to members of the GRC for providing them with shelter at this time, when they need so much assistance. Mrs. Glen was very overwhelmed to receive the donation from Mr. Cush. Words failed her as she tried her best to say how thankful she was for everything that had been done for the Glen family. She, however, managed to show her happiness upon receiving the items.
Mrs. Barbara Walrond, treasurer of the GRC, was present when the items were being handed over. She said the shelter has been home to 17 families, consisting of 69 persons, over the past 18 years; and service has improved tremendously from that time to now. With support and assistance from generous organizations and members of the public, the GRC has been able to provide as much as it can to persons in distress.
Mrs. Walrond made an open appeal for any kind of support from any member of the public, in helping the GRC mitigate the effects of losses suffered by those who have been distressed by disaster. She said the GRC can only continue its excellent work if assisted by the public.
The donation from Mr. Cush, which was so highly appreciated, is worthy of emulation, she said. On behalf of the Glen family, deepest gratitude has been extended to Mr. Cush.
