A COUPLE was refused bail yesterday on a joint drug trafficking charge. Roderick Robertson and Melissa Beveney, both of Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to having had 36 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) for the purpose, on February 11.
Robertson also faced an additional charge, which stated that he sold 32 grammes of the same narcotic to Lance Corporal Edoo.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said, upon receipt of certain information, Edoo went on an undercover operation and bought the prohibited substance from Robertson, for $3,500, before arresting him.
The prosecutor said, other ranks then went to the defendants’ home where a search yielded the 36 grammes in the couple’s kitchen.
Robertson told the court that he does not sell marijuana but the policeman asked that he get it for him.
Robertson and Beveney will make their second court appearance at Providence, also on the East Bank of Demerara, today.
