TONIGHT the annual Namilco Football Festival knockout tournament, which was postponed due to inclement weather, finally gets under way with what is expected to be an entertaining double- header, at the Tucville Playfield from 18:00hrs. The tournament was scheduled to kick off on January 29 but had to be rescheduled due to continuous rainfall two days prior to the kick-off, which made the surface unfit for play.
In the curtain-raiser tonight the University of Guyana team will have a packed agenda as they face off against one of the tournament’s frontrunners, Sunburst Camptown. The evening wraps up with North Rangers and Beacon United battling in the feature from 20:00hrs.
The competition then continues on Wednesday with another double-header as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Guyana Police Force (GPF) clash with Black Pearl and Santos at 18:00hrs and 20:00 hrs respectively.
The other teams in the battle for supremacy are Riddim Squad, Houston Stars, Flamingo, Georgetown Football Club, Charlestown United, Fruta Conquerors, Alpha United and Banks All Stars.
These teams will hunt for top honours with the grand prize set at $1M while the runners-up will have to settle for $500 000. The third- and fourth-place finishers will cart off $200 000 and $100 000 respectively.
Individual prizes up for grabs include Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goalscorer, Most Disciplined Team, Best Goalscorer and Most Promising Junior players.
Fruta Conquerors, the hosts of the tournament, would like to express their gratitude to the sponsors who made the tournament possible especially the National Milling Company Inc.
