Masked bandits rob contractor of booty worth $1M

THREE armed bandits attacked and robbed carpentry contractor Dharmendra Persaud of gold jewels and other possessions valued a total of $1M on Wednesday.
It happened at his Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice home when he alone was there.
He told the media his wife had gone to church when the robbers entered his house and severely beat him, before relieving him of a chain worth $200,000, rings and a band he was wearing.
The 30-year-old man said he was lying on a mattress in his living room, when one of the men barged in and demanded the money he had been paid for a recent contract.
Persaud said he denied having any cash and was gun-butted by the man while his accomplices went into the bedroom, ransacked the wardrobe and removed brand name shirts, cosmetics and his wife Mardai’s jewellery, with a value of $300,000, which was in a box on the vanity.
He said the masked assailants then escaped after firing a gunshot in the air.
Police are continuing to investigate the robbery.
