Pregnant woman in couple remanded on drug charge

THIRTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD mason Oliver Gordon and housewife Monica Howard, 29, both of Coghlan Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Chandra Sohan, at Vreed-en-Hoop Court, West Bank Demerara, charged with drug trafficking. The common-law husband and wife both pleaded not guilty to having, on February 4, approximately four grammes of cannabis (marijuana) for the purpose.
Police Sergeant Matthews, prosecuting, said the prohibited substance was found during a search at the couple’s home in various places, including a wall divider and toilet and bathroom.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendants supply the narcotic to different people.
Attorney-at-law, Ms. Ramkumar, for the defence, said the defendants were taken to the police station forcefully and Howard, who is seven months pregnant, was put to lie on cold concrete.
The lawyer made an application for the duo to be granted bail but it was denied and they were remanded to prison until February 14.
