Mother of baby killed in boat mishap critical at GPH

THE woman, whose baby died when the boat they were travelling in collided with another in the Cuyuni River on Sunday was listed in critical but stable condition in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, up to press time yesterday. The woman underwent emergency surgery at the GPH on Sunday afternoon, having being referred from the Bartica Hospital.
Police said two boat captains are in police custody pending investigations.
At about 10:00hrs on Sunday last, in the vicinity of Matub Back Channel, Cuyuni River, the two boats collided, resulting in the death of nine-month-old Sarah Simmonds.
Investigations so far reveal that the baby was in the company of her mother, Nadia Singh, 32, and father, George Simmonds, 34, of Bartica, travelling in a boat from Aranka to Bartica, along with the captain and three other persons.
The boat collided with another vessel, and George Simonds, Nadia Singh and their baby all received injuries.
The baby was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica, while, her parents were referred to the GPH.
