POLICE Commissioner Henry Greene could soon be charged with rape and taken to court as any normal person would, following allegations recently made against him by a 34-year-old mother of two. According to unconfirmed reports, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has advised the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to institute the rape charge against Greene.
According to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, sometime around last Wednesday, the rape file was re-sent to the DPP, Shalimar Ali-Hack, for advice, after she had indicated that the police needed to conduct further investigations.
A high-level police source told this publication yesterday, on condition of anonymity, that should Green be charged, he would be treated as any normal person would. The source said that rape is a common charge around the courts.
Green could even be remanded to prison, depending on the magistrate’s decision, the source pointed out.
Last December, a woman accused Commissioner Greene of raping her at a city hotel on November 22, 2011. The woman broke her story to the media before going with Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes to the Brickdam Police Station to file an official complaint.
President Donald Ramotar subsequently acceded to Commissioner Greene’s request for leave in order to facilitate investigations into that allegation.
After an investigation was recommended, external assistance was requested, and a team of investigators from the Jamaica Police Force investigated the allegation against Commissioner Greene. The team left Guyana after completing the preliminary investigations.
Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brummel is currently acting in the capacity of Police Commissioner.
