POLICE have detained her husband to assist with investigations into the brutal murder of 54-year-old Seeta Reddy, of Lot 139 Second Street, Craig Village, East Bank Demerara. He was held shortly after rushing home to check on her when calls to her phone went unanswered and made the gruesome discovery of the woman’s mutilated body in a pool of blood.
The corpse was found in the bottom flat of the two-storey house with multiple stab wounds and her neck severed.
Two bedrooms in the building were ransacked but it could not be determined whether anything of value was missing.
Police said they are pursuing several leads but, so far, robbery/murder is suspected and they are also hunting three men who were observed on the premises before the alarm was raised.
Neighbours said the trio had been calling for Reddy around 14:00 hrs on Wednesday when she was home alone.
Her husband said he was on his way to work when he was stopped by police and asked for his driving licence and motor vehicle registration but, as he could not locate the documents, he telephoned his wife for her to search for them.
However, he found the documentation under a seat in the vehicle and, minutes after, made several phone calls to her but got no answer. He said he became worried and returned home to ascertain what was happening.
On arriving there, he said he switched on the lights and began searching for her after calling out her name and getting no response. Then he stumbled upon the body and summoned the police.
Reddy used to sell chicken at her home and was seen alive, by neighbours, up to about 13:00 hrs. They, subsequently, heard screams but paid no attention until they were informed of her murder.
The dead woman’s son-in-law, Ryan Harimal and his wife were among others at the crime scene on Wednesday.
The mother of six lived with her husband and a granddaughter and had been the victim of a previous robbery, in March 2011, when bandits carted off $2M in cash and jewellery, but the robbers were never apprehended.
