Harper retains GCA’s presidency

OUTGOING president of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Roger Harper was Tuesday night re-elected unopposed to govern the affairs of that body for the next two years, when that body held its Annual General Meeting and election of office-bearers at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) Sports Club in Woolford Avenue. In fact, the affiliated members of the GCA, who were present at the AGM, had no objection to Harper, a former Guyana and West Indies all-rounder returning to the stewardship of cricket in Georgetown, hence all of his executives were returned unopposed for a third successive term.
The lone new face is that of Afzal Khan a former Marketing Manager of the Guyana Cricket Board, who takes over the similar position from Eric Whaul, after the latter did not seek re-election. Dennis Wilson, who served as assistant treasurer under Harper and two other GCA presidents before him in Alfred Mentore and Bish Panday, replaces Harry Parmesar as the treasurer.
Neil Barry Sr, Bro. Azad Ibrahim, Deborah McNichol, Colin Alfred and Captain Ron Daniels were all re-elected to their respective positions of first and second vice-president, secretary, Public Relations Officer (PRO) and assistant secretary respectively.
PKF, Barcellos, Narine and Company, a chartered accounts firm located at Lamaha and Carmichael Streets was retained by the GCA as the authorised auditors and Shaun Massiah the Competitions Committee Chairman.
Harper and his executives will administer cricket for another two years, following a motion that was put to the floor by the Muslim Youth Organisation of Guyana and carried unopposed, requesting that the term life of the GCA executive body be increased from one year to two years.
In his thank-you speech, Harper expressed his appreciation to the GCA affiliated members for the trust and faith shown in him and his executives. He pledged to continue working to provide quality cricketers for Demerara, Guyana and the West Indies at large, having earlier thanked them for their support over the past year, along with the numerous sponsors of Georgetown’s cricket.
In her capacity as secretary before being re-elected, McNichol read the administrative report which outlined the GCA’s list of activities for 2011, including objectives and programmes that were targeted and executed, to the audience which included former Guyana and West Indies skipper and Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) Clive Lloyd.
Harper called for one minute’s silence to the memory of the late Robert Williams, a former Deputy Mayor of Georgetown and an ardent cricket enthusiast at the start of the meeting.
