Old aquaculture pond at Nismes Primary filled

–other school compounds get general cleaning
TEACHERS, parents and guardians have expressed deep satisfaction that the old aquaculture pond which existed for over three decades outside the Nismes Primary School compound, West Bank Demerara, has finally been filled, ending the threat of danger to school children from snakes and other reptiles.
According to Regional Executive Officer, Paul Ramrattan, an initial assessment was done, leading to an outlet being dug to drain the pond. It was subsequently discovered that the required works were beyond the capacity of the regional administration, and a contractor was retained to complete the work at a total cost of $946,000.
Meanwhile, the Uitvlugt Primary School fence has been completely cleared of bush, much to the relief of parents, teachers and pupils. Maiden drains were dug on the eastern and western sides of the fence to more efficiently drain water off the surrounding areas.
Ramrattan also informed that the Bagotville Primary and the Vreed-en-Hoop and St. John’s Secondary schools benefited from a general cleaning of their compounds, and he promised that the administration would continue to enhance the environment of schools on a case-by-case basis.
