– at opening of African Heritage Museum exhibition
PRIME Minister Samuel Hinds, at the opening of an art exhibition at the African Heritage Museum, Barima Avenue, Bel Air, on Tuesday evening, encouraged creative artists to continue sculpting and exhibiting their talent. The exhibition, declared open under the theme ‘Vision of Freedom’, and will run until January 31, from 10:00hrs to 17:00hrs daily, and showcases sculptures, and art and craft pieces.
Prime Minister Hinds commended the Guyana United Artists (GUA) and the African Heritage Museum for the exhibition.
“Our artists are very important in that they depict quite often feelings that we may not be very conscious of…these feelings come out of our history and our ancestry,” Hinds said.
Assistant Director of Culture, Colonel Linden Ross, in brief remarks, said that the exhibition is held at a time when the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport is placing much emphasis on the creative arts.
“The ministry is developing the framework for a creative arts institute in Guyana… the mission of this institute is to create well educated, culturally literate and active participants of cultural life in the 21st century, as cultural practitioners, managers, critics and consumers…the ministry, therefore, applauds the GUA for the splendid work they have been doing in showcasing the talent of its members and hopes that it develops a long-term relationship among the cultural practitioners in Guyana,” Ross said.
The hosting of the Inter-Guiana Festival, during August is yet another step government has taken to aid the continuing sustained development of cultural activities in the country, which would serve to bring to the fore the talent of the Guyanese people.
It is expected that the Inter-Guiana Festival would exhibit the best talent from Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana.
