… commences with Dr Cheddi Jagan Memorial Knockout Tournament
THE Berbice Football Association (BFA) will commence its 2012 football season on Saturday, with the kicking off of the Dr Cheddi Jagan Memorial Football Knockout tournament at the Blairmont Community Centre ground. Eight affiliated clubs will participate in this senior football tournament which will see the fourth year of sponsorship from the Regional Democratic Council of Region Six and which New Amsterdam United Football Club have won on three occasions.
Cougars FC, Monedderlust FC, Manchester United, Courtland United, Rosignol United, Pistons United, Hardlanders FC and the defending champions will battle for the top places in this year’s tournament.
The fixture will see on Saturday January 28, at 13:30 hrs 2010 runners-up Monedderlust FC open the challenge to Manchester United while in the supporting match the defending champs face newcomers Hardlanders FC at 15:30 hrs.
The tournament will continue on Sunday 29th at the same venue and same time, with Pistons United meeting Cougars FC and Rosignol United tackling Courtland United in the feature match.
The BFA will also host a three-day female tournament in honour of former President Mrs. Janet Jagan on March 9, 10, 17 with players from East and West Berbice participating.
At the conclusion of this tournament a squad will be shortlisted for encampment at the GTU Hall in New Amsterdam in preparation for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Annual Inter-Association Women’s League which is scheduled to commence on April 7.
President of the BFA Keith O’Jeer said the Under-17 tournament will see affiliated clubs participate in a two-day event for selection to the association’s representative squad to commence the GFF Inter-Association tournament scheduled to kick-off on March 11.
O’Jeer pointed out that the Under-20 Inter-Association tournament will kick off one week after the Under-17 tournament, with players being selected from the BFA Inter-club tournament on February 25 and 26, at the Blairmont Community Centre.
BFA league champions New Amsterdam United will battle for top places in this year’s GFF National Super League playoff for the tenth position, against group compatriots Grove Hi-Tech, Den Amstel and Mill Ballers of Bartica.
New Amsterdam United will open their challenge for the final place in the league on February 12 against Grove Hi Tech at Diamond Community Centre ground, before travelling to Uitvlugt where they face Den Amstel one week later.
NA United’s final qualifying encounter would be held at the Blairmont ground on February 19 where they challenge Mill Ballers from Bartica, closing off the first half of the BFA season in the process.
