SARASYATEE JAYANTI dedicates to the worship of the Divine in yet another sacred name, Sarasvatee. On this day Hindus keep fast, engage in prayers, temple worship and introspection. Sarasvatee means one who is possessed of infinite knowledge of the universe, of words, their objects and relations. Sarasvatee is another feminine name of God and is the manifestation of ‘Gyaan Shakti’ – the power of speech and wisdom. In short she represents learning, knowledge and speech. She is mostly worshipped by students and those who are in the field of education. However, She does not only represent academic education, but ‘Brahma Vidya’—Supreme Knowledge or Knowledge of God.
It is the universal concept that one should strive for knowledge, free thy self of ignorance and live with inner solace. But though that has been so, many failed enormously to understand what knowledge itself is; be able to define it; and live in parallel with it. There are many confusions, controversies and doubts to actually separate knowledge from ignorance, reality from unreality.
Knowledge is that by which the true nature of things are known. It is where real things are looked upon as real, pure as pure, impure as impure, temporal as temporal, permanent as permanent, misery as misery, joy as joy. On the other hand, that by which the true nature of things remains unknown is referred to as ignorance.
Hence the observance of Sarasvatee Jayanti and the adoration of her remind us of the importance of true knowledge and the need for acquisition.
