Adina Capitus dies at 105

AFTER having lived a full and gratifying life of service to her family, friends and village, one of Guyana’s oldest centenarians, Mrs. Adina Newby Vangroney Capitus, died recently.
Mrs. Capitus, who lived with her two daughters at 88 David Rose Street, Bagotsville, West Bank Demerara, passed away peacefully last January 16.
She was buried on Sunday at Le Repentir Cemetery, following viewing of the body and a thanksgiving service at Sandy’s Funeral Home, Chapel Street, in Georgetown.
Born on April 20, 1906, her passing came just three months short of her 106th birthday. She died of natural causes.
A mother of four, three girls and one boy, she is survived by 14 grandchildren and more than two dozen great-grands.
Bereaved relatives recalled that most of the centenarian’s working years were spent at the Diamond Sugar Estate.
A bereaved grandson, Kirk Nurse, said his grandmother suffered no major illness leading to her death, and except for a touch of influenza now and then, and visual and hearing impairment, expected at her age, she was of good health.  Her memory too, was fairly good and she had an uncanny ability of recollecting memorable events.
In 2011, in recognition of her 105th birth anniversary, Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. joined in celebration with her at her Bagotsville home.  On that occasion, the humanitarian organization made a presentation to the wonderful old woman, of personal effects and canned food items, along with two birthday cards, one from Leon Davis, Executive Director of Food for the Poor Guyana Inc.
The Guyana Chronicle joins in extending heartfelt condolences to the sorrowing relatives of the late centenarian.
