Victim reneges, policemen freed of robbery charge

TWO policemen appeared in court yesterday on a joint robbery charge but, after the alleged victim reneged on the allegation, Acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry dismissed the case.
Lance Corporal Raquel Henry and Corporal Clinton Conway, who pleaded not guilty, had been charged with having, on November 6 at Mabaruma Police Outpost, North West District, robbed Sherwin Smith of $50,000.
Defence counsel, Patrice Henry informed the court that Smith did not wish to proceed with the prosecution but the virtual complainant was not present to confirm what the lawyer said and the defendants were sent away on their own recognisances.
However, later in the day, Smith confirmed that he was not proceeding with the matter.
He said he was arrested for a robbery he knew nothing about and, at the time, was in possession of $84,000. However, the money went missing and the defendants were charged.
Smith said he was not forced to discontinue but did so of his own free will.
