Manslaughter convict found with marijuana in jail

A MANSLAUGHTER convict serving an eight-year sentence was busted with four grammes of cannabis (marijuana) when searched on returning to the New Amsterdam Prison, in Berbice, last Thursday afternoon.
Police said the18-year-old prisoner, Stephen Julian, was in company with other inmates who had, earlier, left the penitentiary on a supervised assignment to a well-known fabricating/welding workshop  shortly before 09:00 hrs.
It was on completion of their work that the search took place after they returned to the jail at 16:00 hrs.
An Assistant Prison Officer reported, after searching Julian, that he found a transparent plastic bag, containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant, at the bottom of a haversack which the  prisoner had in his possession.
The illegal substance was weighed and charges are expected to be laid soon.
