Burns Care Unit gifted very important $2.6M machine
THE Guyana Burn & Healthcare Charitable Foundation, the key sponsor of the Burns Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), has donated a diathermy machine to the institution.
The instrument that is used to control bleeding by cauterisation of patients suffering burns was handed over in the GPH Central Stores on Thursday.
GPH Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michael Khan, said the donation, worth some $2.6M, is another, in the continuous process, from the founders of the Burns Care Unit under the leadership of Dr. Raj Kumar.
Khan said diathermy is very important in the treatment of patients with burns and will contribute significantly to the enhancement of the system which is very close to achieving the status of excellence.
He said the GPH has also procured other equipment/instruments required for the smooth functioning of the unit and those are already in use, while the Guyana Burn & Healthcare Charitable Foundation Inc. has committed to refurbishing the facility and working apace to have the job completed.
Khan said that a contractor will visit the hospital to repair the special doors which were gifted by the Foundation and other rehabilitation will be done, too.
Outlining plans for the GPH, he said training and other infrastructural works are scheduled for the duration of 2012.
GPH Public Relations Officer Alero Proctor said some of the latest gift machine accessories were also acquired, courtesy of Covidien/Valley Lab in the United States, through which they were sourced.
Patients who suffer burns stand to benefit tremendously from the improvements at the Unit, resulting from a proposal made by one of the GPH Registrars in the Surgical Department, as the institution continually strives to provide quality health care to all patients.
