Clerk accused of issuing false receipts refused bail

SHELDON Burgess, of Lot 63 Vigilance North, East Coast Demerara, was refused bail yesterday on charges of larceny by clerk. One of the indictable offences, with which he is charged before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, said, between February 7 and December 30, 2011, being a clerk or servant at Interstate Battery, he stole $1.6M, property of Wayne James, out of the possession of his employer.
Another allegation against Burgess said, on June 17, 2011, being a clerk or servant, he willfully made a false entry on a receipt, stating that he received the sum of $100,000 from Drummer Vulcanizing instead of $150,000, knowing it to be false.
Police Corporal Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, objected to bail for the accused, indicating that Burgess is likely to face additional charges.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant recently did a full audit and discovered the money missing and an investigation revealed that the accused, during February and December, took the cash by making false receipts for customers.
Burgess is to be back in court tomorrow.
