FORMER student of the Berbice Educational Institute, overseas-based and popular footballer Owen ‘Piggy” Humphrey, is back home with some former students and has organised a T20 cricket match and a football match between the two secondary schools – Berbice High School and Berbice Educational Institute – to be played at the All Saints Primary School ground in Queenstown, New Amsterdam, tomorrow afternoon in honour of the late Rajkishore Mangal M.S., former headmaster of Berbice Educational Institute (BEI).
Mangal had given 48 years of service to Guyana’s education system. He retired as headmaster in 1995.
He then started the first branch of the Cyril Potter College of Education at Rose Hall Town also in 1995, where, for the first time trained secondary school teachers were churned out to the education system in Berbice. As a result he received a Medal of Service (MS) in 2002 from former President Bharrat Jagdeo for his outstanding contribution.
He died on September 24, 2011 at the age of 70 after a brief illness.
The former student said that a similar tournament started four years ago between the past students of the two education institutions in New Amsterdam and this year they have decided to promote and rename the tournament in his honour.
The day’s activity will commence at 13:00hrs with the T20 tapeball cricket competition and will be followed by the football game, in which former players are expected to take part.
Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) won at football and cricket in the first two years and Berbice High School (BHS) took honours last year in the same disciplines.
Former national goalkeeper Phillip Carrington and former national youth defender Ceon Bristol with the services of Kurt Alphonso, Dexter Welcome, Norville Simpson, Richard Damon, Loring Benons and Neil Humphrey will lead the Berbice High School side.
Former national youth defender Sherwin Forde will captain the BEI side with full support from Owen Humphrey, the Bradford brothers Fred and Charles, Robert ‘Buntin’ Carrington, Vivian Bowling, Shawn Sauers and Michael Smith.
