RENALDO MARKS of Lot 29 Louisa Row, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown was charged in March 2010 for abducting Andre Barnes, and was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment last Thursday by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell in that Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. Particulars of the charge are that on March 12, 2010, the 24-year-old Marks abducted Andre Barnes, intending to hold him for a ransom of $50M.
An additional charge of giving police false information was dismissed against Marks.
Police Sergeant Neville Jeffers, in prosecuting the case, produced several witnesses.
The magistrate took into consideration the amount of time Marks had spent incarcerated before sentencing him to four years’ imprisonment. The maximum penalty for the offence of abduction is five years.
On Friday, March 12, 2010, Andre Barnes was snatched from West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while dropping his girlfriend home. However, after a ransom demand for $50M was made, ranks from the Tactical Services Unit found Barnes and Marks in a house in North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Mr. John Barnes, uncle of the kidnapped Andre, had related that his nephew’s mother had informed him about the kidnapping at around 22:00 hrs that day and he had immediately driven to the East La Penitence Police Station to report the matter.
The victim’s girlfriend had made a similar report at the West Ruimveldt Police Outpost.
About an hour later, police officials informed him that they had located his nephew’s car, and that the young Andre Barnes had been rescued.
