Past champions battle tonight

CRICKET fans in Antigua will get their money’s worth in tonight’s feature matchup of this year’s West Indies Cricket Board-organised Caribbean T20 tournament, when past champions Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago go head-to-head from 20:00hrs. T&T’s Kieron Pollard warned the other teams in the tournament to pay attention to his destructive batting against Leeward Islands Wednesday night because this was just a touch of the surface.
Pollard blasted a brutal, unbeaten 56 from 15 deliveries, allowing Trinidad & Tobago to run up the highest team total in the three-year history of the CT20, reaching 211 for 3 in their Group-A match at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.
Next in Pollard’s sight would be the Guyanese whose bowling attack he tore apart in the 2010 Airtel Champions League in South Africa, when he was representing his adopted team from India, the Mumbai Indians.
How he fares against the spin-based bowling line-up of the opposition, led by West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Royston Crandon, Steven Jacobs and Narsingh Deonarine, is left to be seen.
Starting things for the Twin Island Republic team would be their West Indies openers in Lendl Simmons and Adrian Barath, with the vast-improving Darren Bravo, his older brother Dwayne, Pollard, Jason Mohammed and skipper Denesh Ramdin following.
Judging from the team which played their second game Wednesday night, following a humiliating loss to the Windward Islands in their first, T&T will look to West Indies ace fast bowler Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine, Samuel Badree, Kevon Cooper and Jason Mohammed to take care of their bwoling attack.
The Guyanese would always recall, their historic win over their opponents six years ago, when Deonarine slog-swept Badree over wide long on to seal the win in the Stanford 20/20 tournament.
For tonight’s game, the Guyanese batting line-up will include dependable West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Trevon Griffith, Crandon, skipper Christopher Barnwell and first-match hero Leon Johnson.
Add West Indies T20 wicketkeeper/batsman Derwin Christian, Jacobs, Deonarine and both Permaul and Bishoo to the fray and immediately one would recognise depth in the 2010 Ct20 champions batting.
Gregory Brathwaite and Vincent Bullen are the men in charge of this encounter, which can certainly be described as a scorcher for this year’s tournament which has a whopping US$62 500 waiting in the wings for the winner.

Teams Guyana from: Christopher Barnwell (captain), Sewnarine Chattergoon, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Trevon Griffith, Leon Johnson, Royston Crandon, Steven Jacobs, Narsingh Deonarine, Derwin Christian, Rajiv Ivan, Dillon Heyliger, Ronsford Beaton, Veerasammy Permaul and Devendra Bishoo.
