Judge grants bail to previously denied drug defendant

JUSTICE Brassington Reynolds, in the Berbice High Court, on Wednesday, granted Audrey Cummings $300,000 bail on a drug trafficking charge. The defendant, who was previously denied pre-trial liberty, was also ordered to report to Central Police Station, in New Amsterdam, Berbice, on Mondays of each succeeding week until her trial is concluded.
The petition for Cummings was presented by attorney-at-law Ms. Kim Kyte-John, with a supporting affidavit by Gordon Bruce, reputed husband of the petitioner.
Bruce stated that, on October 7, 2011, Cummings was present when a party of policemen carried out a search at their St. John Street, New Amsterdam home.
He said subsequent to the raid Cummings and three others were arrested and taken into custody, after a kidney dish was discovered with two grammes of suspected cocaine in it.
Cummings appeared before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud on October 10, when she was remanded to prison.
