FOUR armed bandits robbed Fung Fook Supermarket, at Lot 6 Vryheid, West Canje, Berbice, of cash and jewellery on Monday. Police confronted them but the gang discharged several rounds in their direction although no injuries were reported.
The 53-year-old owner of the business, Deryck Fung-a-Fook was outside his shop, in company of a friend, Leonard Bhagwandin, a tractor operator of Rose Hall Sugar Estate, in Berbice, too, when he observed a white motor car stopping about 100 metres from his premises.
Four partially masked men entered the open business place, two of them each carrying a long gun, another with a smaller gun and the fourth with a cutlass.
Fung-a-Fook’s daughter Erika, the 21-year-old cashier, on seeing the quartet hid behind a freezer but was discovered by one of the perpetrators who gun-butted her about the body, demanding money in the process.
She was dragged to the cash register and, subsequently, to the upper flat of the building where further demands were made.
During the twelve minutes ordeal, Fung-a-Fook and Bhagwandin were forced to lie face down as the intruders escaped on foot in the surrounding swamplands.
Police investigations into the attack are continuing but the extent of the loss suffered has not been disclosed.
