Anguillan is acting general secretary of CFU

NEW YORK CITY,(CMC) – Damien Hughes has been appointed the acting General Secretary of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU). Hughes has been the general secretary of the Anguilla Football Association for the last 10 years.
The 34-year-old Hughes fills the position left vacant when Angenie Kanhai resigned effective December 20 last year.
Jeffrey Webb, chairman of the normalisation committee put in place to run the affairs of the CFU following the shake up in its administration, said Hughes will serve as the CFU’s chief administrator until June, about a month after the CFU stages its Congress in May.
“(He will) maintain the communication lines between the CFU and its members, and to prepare the Union for its ordinary congress set for May 2012,” said Webb in a letter to CFU member associations.
“As you will imagine, the success of Mr. Hughes’ tenure will be dependent upon our ability to partner with him as he seeks to assist us in return the Union to some level of administrative normality.”
Hughes is a graduate from Moorehouse College in Atlanta and also has a Masters degree from York University in Toronto, Canada.
The nine-member Normalisation Committee was selected in December by the 30 presidents of the Caribbean federations as the first step to rebuild the CFU following the tumultuous past year when the organisation was rocked by the cash-for-votes scandal.
The CFU has been without a president since Austin ‘Jack’ Warner resigned June 20 amid ethics allegations surrounding the FIFA presidential candidacy of Mohamed bin Hamman, ending his 20-year tenure.
The allegations, which also led to sanctions against several members of the CFU, prompted December’s gathering at FIFA urging to develop a plan to re-structure.
