Cleaner charged with $1.5M jewel theft

A DOMESTIC worker appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with a $1.5M jewel theft. The simple larceny charge against Chandroutie Muniram, 50, of Lot 13 Plantation Le Ressouvenir, East Cost Demerara, to which she pleaded not guilty, said the offence was committed between November 3, 2011 and January 3, 2012.
It is alleged that she stole a gold and diamond bracelet, worth $1.5M, property of Nandanie Sukwah.
Police Corporal Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, informed the Court that the defendant would usually clean for the virtual complainant, and after Sukwah’s room was cleaned, the jewel was discovered missing.
On an application, Defence Counsel Rexford Jackson petitioned for reasonable bail, surety was set at $100,000, until January 9.
