THE nation and the rest of the world are watching as the PNC/APNU once again continues it tradition of lies. This time they are citing discrepancies with Statements of Polls after General Elections which took place more than five weeks ago. First, they argued that the delay by the Guyana Elections Commission to release the results (GECOM released the results two and a half days after the polls closed) was because they were tampering with the figures. Now, more than one month after they themselves received copies of the Statements of Polls to review, they expect the nation to believe them when they say there were discrepancies. Why take so long? Is it because that they were now taking the chance of tampering with the figures?
I have said it before and am saying it again, never before has the nation’s destiny been entrusted in the hands of ALL the leaders of the contesting political parties at a general election. After calling for the last 10 years for shared governance – the PNC/APNU and the AFC now have shared governance – they control Parliament by a majority of one. Not only that, they have control of the Georgetown Municipality, Regions 10, 8, 7 and 4 and therefore control the governance of those regions. Is this not shared governance?
The PNC/APNU is now set on the road to betray their constituents as they sacrifice the reins of governance on a campaign for ‘loser takes all’.
Even after they have changed their name from PNC to APNU that party continues to lie to the nation. Even after overseas and other observers have deemed the Guyana Elections to be free and fair, the PNC/APNU are still lying to the country.
Interlinked with their tradition of lying, they will now instigate their supporters to take to the streets in an effort to intimidate Indo Guyanese and PPP/C supporters, although they will attempt to deny that.
They will call out their ‘hooligans’ for ‘protest action’ in a deliberate ploy to bring about instability in Guyana and to incite racial strife.
The PNC/APNU supporters should remember that it was their own leaders who had pledged to make the nation ungovernable after the 1997 elections when they again lost the elections to the PPP/C. It was the PNC leaders who urged their following not to work with the government of the day.
The majority of their following are of Afro-Guyanese descent, some of whom are now reaping the “benefits” of obeying their leaders. Lack of academic education, poorly paid jobs and poor economic conditions are the prices that were paid to those loyal supporters who listened to the PNC leaders. Who’s to blame? Surely not the PPP!
What is troubling is that the PNC has already created havoc in the nation, and are fully prepared to do so again as the PNC/APNU. Their rank and file party members will pay the price when the nation goes back to the polls. This is where we are heading, since the opposition party is willing to sacrifice the gains it made on November 28, 2011.
The supporters of the PPP/C are the ones who must decide now – to NOT vote or VOTE – and return the PPP/C not only to the Presidency, but with a Parliamentary majority! Why?
I said it before, and I repeat: “If the AFC and APNU would have been given the reins of governance in 2011 and then sacrificed it at the Helm of LUNACY and not UNITY, then they should NOT be returned to Parliament with a majority. PPP/C supporters should not allow them this again.”
Our leaders will be answerable for whatever events their conduct might produce – this is not the time for the opposition to feel their power, but chart the way forward through negotiations, and willingness to compromise.
