Get the illegal gunslingers off the streets

AFTER reading this in the news media: “ODINGO Chase (no address given) was remanded to prison yesterday on charges of unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition before Acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry he pleaded not guilty to the offences, particulars of which said, on December 16, he had a .45 ‘Glock’ pistol and four matching rounds without being the holder of a firearm licence. Defence counsel, Gordon Gilhuys made a failed bail application, arguing that the firearm was not found on the defendant but on the National Park tarmac during a football match. The lawyer also complained that the police had detained Chase beyond 72 hours.”
This is what comes to most people’s minds after reading this in the media.
A 51-year-old man is at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nursing a gunshot wound to his left leg after a failed robbery attempt caused his attackers to open fire on him.
Andrew Correia, a sales clerk of the GTM insurance company, was shot around 08:00 hrs last Saturday while delivering issues of the New Year’s calendar to clients of his firm.
Most Guyanese are on their hands and knees begging that the lawmakers of Guyana to please give Odingo Chase a permanent jail cell number in a jail for like 40 years or more to really put a dent on such a serious crime.
No one can blame Odingo Chase’s lawyer for the lame excuses he is making for his client. It’s his job but to complain about police holding his client for more than 72 hours is another matter.
Serious offences such as having illegal guns in your possession must be given more time so police can really get to the bottom of their case; simply because criminals like this will never fully co-operate with the police.
If it were up to me I would like to see Odingo Chase in a jail cell for 72 years.
Taxpayers would gladly pay for his accommodation so it will be one less illegal gunslinger off the streets of Guyana.
