A SEA turtle, weighing approximately 80 pounds, was found aback Rambaran’s Wharf, at Hope, East Bank Demerara. Bharat Persaud, an employee of Winston Rambaran Transport Service, Wharf and Bond, told the Guyana Chronicle that he discovered it floating in the water around 10:00hrs and “fighting up”.
That prompted him to think that it was in some sort of danger or sick but it swam next to a boat and was pulled up with the aid of a rope.
One of the sailors who helped to lift it out speculated that its weight was about 80 pounds. He and other employees were unsuccessful in their attempt to contact the relevant authorities.
But this newspaper was assured that the turtle will be taken care of by the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society.
One of its officers said the floating is usually caused by a build-up of gas in the system and that happens when turtles are away from their feeding ground.
However, he said, after inspection, the turtles are usually released back into the sea.
