North Ruimveldt dreadlocked resident Karen Mc Farlene, 44, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and fined $30,000 after being found with 480 grammes of suspected cannabis sativa in her skirt waist during a road block at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice on June 26, 2009.
The Lot 3765 North Ruimveldt mother of three was sentenced by Magistrate Roby Benn at the Blairmont Court on Monday. She had previously denied the allegation of trafficking in narcotics.
Police Inspector Donna Grant-Fraser, prosecuting, had stated that the defendant was a passenger in minibus BHH 7061 en route to Moleson Creek, Corentyne when the vehicle was stopped at a road block on the West Coast Berbice roadway.
The passengers were told to disembark, but Mc Farlene, who attracted police attention by her suspicious actions, was thereafter searched. Portions of the prohibited plant were unearthed in a double-seam in her waistline. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
