GUYANA has gone the full circle; during the 1962 disturbances, business places in Regent Street had to pay for protection of their properties.
They had to paint PNC on their showcases so they would be spared from looting and fire, all because they were perceived to be PPP supporters.
Today, I see they are telling the general public to boycott their businesses in the city because they believed that the owners supported the PPP at the local elections.
I always thought that in a democracy people had a right to vote for whatever political party they supported and believe would be able to develop the country better.
I can remember seeing a number of Police and G.D.F officers at Sophia, pledge allegiance to the PNC party; how can we trust these people when they put party before the country.
As a supporter of Walter Rodney’s WPA, I was told by leading members of the party how Burnham and the GDF assassinated Rodney and out of the blues this year a leader of the party made two statements in which he committed that Dr. Rodney and the WPA wanted to overthrow the government by force of arms.
They could not get the support of Dr. Jagan, however, because he was a pacifist and believed in parliamentary democracy which was winning the elections.
Today, these leaders of the WPA are hand in hand with the PNC trying to cause confusion in the streets of Georgetown two weeks after the recent election results were published and all the political parties knew the results by November 29 and how many votes each party received.
Must the Guyanese people be asked after every election to go through this horror?
Let’s get on with building and development of our country for our children and children’s children.
