President Ramotar urges patriotism, open-mindedness in moving nation forward
NEWLY-elected President, Mr. Donald Ramotar, in a show of magnanimity and statesmanship, has conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to all those who turned out to vote on November 28, and promised that he will work with all Guyanese so that the country can realise its true potential.
In a message especially tailored for this purpose and broadcast on television, President Ramotar is quoted by the Government Information Agency (GINA) as saying that the recently held general and regional elections have not only emphasised and preserved the democratic gains of the country, but also demonstrates the confidence of the populace in democracy.
“Allow me this opportunity to say thank you for participating in the democratic process as our young nation continues on its developmental path. Guyana has a proud history of people working together with the resilience to overcome difficulties,” President Ramotar said in his message.
He also seized the opportunity to publicly thank supporters of the PPP/C who worked tirelessly during the campaign period, and the thousands of youths who voted for the first time in a show of “… support for the vision of a brighter future for Guyana.”
The recent polls ended with Mr. Ramotar winning the presidency, and going down in history as the first to be elected under a new regime where the Head of State serves for a minimum of two terms.
According to GINA, the legislature has, for the first time, taken a new approach whereby the majority of the seats in the House are occupied by a combined opposition.
As President Ramotar observed in his message, this is an uncharted period in Guyana’s history that will require that everyone puts their best foot forward.
“This period will require us to demonstrate the noble qualities of patriotism, open-mindedness and a strong will to continue to build national unity so that we can expand on our achievements,” he said.
The ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured 48.6 per cent of the votes ahead of A Partnership for National Unity(APNU)’s 40 per cent, and the Alliance for Change(AFC)’s 10.3 per cent and The United Force’s 0.2 percent.
