Lawyer challenges jurisdiction in carnal knowledge case in Berbice Assizes

Attorney-at-law Joel Persid-Edmond, in preliminary submissions, questioned the jurisdiction of the case in which his client is indicted with carnal knowledge committed on a fourteen-year-old girl. Balram Pitam, alias Netash, is alleged to have committed the sexual act on December 25, 2008 at Number 9 Village, West Coast Berbice.
The lawyer cited that the charge is bad in law, consequently, the committal and the indictment, in his opinion, should be quashed.
State Counsel Ms Rhonnel Weaver is expected to reply to the submissions in the absence of the twelve-member jury. Justice Roxanne George is presiding over the matter.
