A BUS conductor, charged with stealing a cell phone belonging to one of his passengers, was put on $35,000 bail yesterday. Dwight Lila (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell and pleaded not guilty to the charge, particulars of which said he committed the simple larceny on December 6, when he stole the phone, valued $35,000, property of Catherine Stephens.
Police Sergeant, Neville Jeffers, prosecuting, said an on duty policeman saw when the virtual complainant dropped her phone and the defendant picked it up and walked away.
The prosecutor said police went after Lila and arrested him but the defendant told the court he saw the instrument in the bus and it appeared that the virtual complainant had gotten rid of it.
The case will be called, again, on February 7, 2012.
