Yesterday a simple press briefing was held at the Guinness Bar, Durban Street where top members of the organizing committee Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole disclosed the current progression of the event.
Mendonca stated that even though the tournament was understandably put on pause because of the National Elections and the unsure state that the country was in. However, he said, the halt did not affect the tournament in anyway but has given the teams more time to prepare for the matches to come.
He also mentioned that the enthusiasm the teams displayed in the round robin competition he thought was good for the tournament. What was commendable was the inclusion of approximately one million dollars more to the prize monies which was directed to the round robin stage.
The winner of each group was the recipient of $30,000 while the runners up claimed $25,000, $20,000 and $15,000.
Mendonca, a former national Guyana Footballer, also added: “in comparison to last year’s tournament, this year has been a tremendous one with the response from the fans, teams and even referees.”
Meanwhile, they made public of their intent of having Guyana’s reggae artiste Natural Black perform at the finals but since the change of date due to halt, it is unclear of his availability. However, confirmation will be made as soon as possible.
