Vice Chairman of Region 3 (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands) Mr Manpersaud, died on Tuesday at his residence, East Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, following a prolonged illness. The former Vice Chairman was hospitalised for brief periods at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, the Georgetown Public Hospital, and subsequently at the Balwant Singh Hospital.
Manpersaud, 70, who was a long –serving member of the People’s Progressive Party, was a former party organiser in the Essequibo Islands region.
He held various positions, including Vice Chairman of the now defunct National Congress of Local Democratic Organs; member of the Sea Defence Board; member of the Central Board of Health; member of the Board of Guardians-lower West Coast Demerara; member of the commission- National Development Strategy on Urban development; and member of the commission for the Elderly-Ministry of Human Services.
Manpersaud was one of the longest serving councillors at the regional level. He assumed the position of regional Vice Chairman following the 2006 general and regional elections.
He leaves to mourn his wife, three daughters, two brothers and six grand children, among others.
Manpersaud would be cremated tomorrow at Kaashi Dhaam, Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara .
