Kings looking for second title

IN 1998 and for the first time in the history of the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA), the village of Victoria had something else to celebrate.
It was the EDFA league the discipline bunch of youths playing for Victoria Kings, from the village and under Dwayne Huntley’s coaching, won which saw the commencement of a period of dominance in the world’s largest sport for the Kings in Guyana.

Invited as an East Coast club to the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football tournament where they were taken lightly, they created an upset to a number of popular clubs in Georgetown to win the Mayor’s Cup title.
That win propelled them into the limelight and after they returned to dominate their domestic league once again, they were granted a spot to compete in the prestigious Kashif and Shanghai tournament in 2001.
The discipline bunch of youth from the East Coast village made the highlights of Guyana’s football, while being one of the top clubs, and another, the village and its environs had something more to celebrate as they became the watchtower In Guyana’s football.
Adding to their list of success, is their ability to retain for three successive years, the Osmond Jeune Memorial trophy, while they competed with credit in the inaugural Guyana Football Federation organized and sponsored ‘Win IN CONCACAF, WITH CONCACAF’ Super League.
This club has been on the run and in tournaments like the Kashif and Shanghai Festival and having been granted the privilege to compete in this year’s tournament which kicks off on December 10 at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, they are not to be taken lightly.
A fit, technical and tactical bunch of players who can on any given day be compared to any one of the best football clubs in Guyana will be looking to land their second title on  January 1, 2012, having done so for the first time back in 2001.
They are a leading club in the EDFA league and have within their ranks, several new faces who on their day can turn out an exemplary performance to see their team to victory and with there being no Alpha United in the lineup this year, must fancy their chances of carting off the top prize on New Year’s Day at the Guyana National Stadium.
Players in the caliber of Pierre Joseph, Clayton Wilson, Calvin and Kwesi De Souza, Aubrey Gibson and the veteran Winston Pompey will be in their lineup for this year’s tournament.
Their first match will be against the winner of Grove Hi-Tech versus Netrockers fixture at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground on December 21, will certainly be a good show down for football fans on the East Coast of Demerara.
