GuySuCo employee remanded pending sentence for theft

GUYSUCO spraying gang employee Nagear Baksh, who confessed to stealing a bottle of weedicide, has been remanded to prison, pending sentence on November 30. The chemical is used to spray the cane fields at Rose Hall, Canje, Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo was told when the 25-year-old defendant appeared before her at New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, yesterday.
Baksh claimed he had left his bag unattended and on leaving the premises he was stopped by the security who discovered the ‘Merlin’.
He said his gang includes 14 persons who also had access to the poisonous liquid, none of which was ever reported missing by his superior.
However, Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, on November 14 last, the convict collected the bottle that was intended to be used on the cultivation plot but instead of using the spray, he concealed it in his bag and was leaving the estate compound, when caught.
The chemical, valued $6,500 is owned by GuySuCo, the prosecutor said.
