Russian crew departure allowed, not cocaine vessel
CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud disclosed yesterday that the crew that was on board the vessel, in which cocaine was found, at the Demerara Shipping Company Wharf on Saturday last, has been allowed to leave the country. But the vessel is still in Guyana although not detained.
Six kilogrammes of the narcotic was discovered in a bag by the Russian crew who summoned the police.
Persaud said that investigations, so far, revealed that the last port of entry for the boat, before it arrived in Guyana, was Suriname and they are collaborating with that country, since the bag containing the illegal drug was made there.
The Assistant Commissioner said the Russian crew was not found to be involved in any way with the find, as such, was allowed to depart but the cocaine is in police possession and they have sent it for a field test as the investigations continue.
The discovery was made about 06:45hrs when workers observed a haversack concealed under a built-in crane on the boat.
No arrest has been made and the vessel was subsequently released.
