Search continues for unruly elements at political meetings
POLICE on Friday night said that ranks on duty at an Alliance For Change (AFC) political meeting that was held at School Street, Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara, on Thursday, November 17, arrested two men who were disturbing the meeting and subsequently sent them away with a warning.
That AFC meeting had commenced at 18:00hrs, and was at the time being addressed by Balwant Persaud when the two men, who had appeared to be inebriated, continuously shouted, “Vote PPP!
Vote Ramotar!” while in the vicinity of the meeting. They were spoken to by a police rank and warned to desist from such behaviour, after which they moved a short distance away.
The two men later returned along the roadway, and as they were in the vicinity of the meeting, they again continuously shouted, “Vote PPP! Vote Ramotar!”
They were then arrested by the police and taken to the Leonora Police Station, where they were later warned and sent away.
Meanwhile, police also said that, relative to statements made by Clifton Harris at a press conference hosted by the PPP/C on Thursday November 17, excerpts of which were published in the print media on Friday to the effect that he and four other PPP/C supporters were harassed by police ranks at the Cove and John Police Station on Wednesday, November 16, the Guyana Police Force categorically denies that any police rank harassed any of the five persons, as claimed.
Quite to the contrary, the police provided protective security for the five PPP/C supporters who had allegedly been attacked by supporters of another political party after a political meeting at Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara, on Wednesday, November 16, 2011.
The police protected them by removing them from the scene and escorting them to the Cove and John Police Station, where their reports were taken; and they were requested to provide information that may lead to the arrest of their alleged assailants.
This professional action of the police has been substantiated by Patricia Johnson, another of the persons appearing at the press conference, who is quoted as saying that she was rescued by a policewoman who placed her in a police vehicle.
Based on the information provided, police ranks went that very night in search of the identified assailants, and this search is ongoing, although efforts have been unsuccessful so far.
