Six teams record wins on NCC tarmac

FESTIVAL City, East Front Road, D’Urban Street, Island All Stars, West Front Road and West Back Road were the latest teams to claim victories when the Guinness ‘Greatest in Da Street’ football competition continued at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) tarmac on Tuesday night. The competition continues tonight at the same venue with North Last Entrance taking on Rasville, Queen Street Tiger Bay versus Island All stars, Hope Street Tiger Bay versus Linden Eagles, Broad Street B versus Linden Retrieve, West Front Road versus Plaisance, Stevedore Housing Scheme versus Kitty, Sophia versus Lodge Housing Scheme and East La Penitence versus Back Circle.
In the opening match of the night on Tuesday, North Last Entrance and Kingston played to a 1-1 draw, Festival City trounced Sophia 4-1, East Front Road conquered Linden Eagles 4-2 and D’Urban Street got past Linden Retrieve 2–1 in the showdown before the break.
When the action resumed Albouystown ‘A’ and Charlestown romped to a 1–1 stalemate, Island All Stars crushed Stevedore Housing Scheme 5-1, West Back Road got past Albouystown 2-0 and in the final match West Front Road defeated Back Circle 2-1.
Sherwin Sampson led with a double for Festival City while being supported by Marco Marcus and Odel Williams who recorded a goal each while Shemroy Arthur’s lone goal for Sophia proved futile.
The Eagles/East FR match was the most intriguing display of the night with both sides trading shot for shot and stealing the lead on numerous occasions. Eagles’ Damon Carter and Derron Smith scored a goal each in the first half against the side which had Shakka Jones recording a first-half double along with a goal from his teammate Mark Hart.
In the second half East Front Road went ahead by two goals on their way to victory compliments of Sean McKenzie.
Jermaine Morrison of Island All Stars recorded the first set of hat-tricks of the tournament as he led the way with his teammate Paul Porter, who scored a double against Stevedore, whose lone goal came off the boot of Kwesi Winter.
