QUEEN’S College yesterday led Guyana to a sweeping victory over the Turks and Caicos HJ Robinson High School in the 2011 Caribbean Schools’ Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition at the Pegasus Hotel in Georgetown. The competition was sponsored by the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).
Guyana emerged winners with 360 points, whilst the opposing team scored 220 points in the three rounds of the competition. But the Turks and Caicos Islands’ Dixie Smith, who answered all her questions correctly, stole the show, copping the Most Valuable Person accreditation in the competition.
Finalists in the Guyana team were Rosanna Bisnauth, Benita Davis, Shafali Milton, and Rehanna Thomas. Coach was Ms. Marilyn Davis. Finalists in the Turks and Caicos team were Dixie Smith, Nia Jones, Zavia Jarrett and Gabrielle Willliams. Their coach was Mrs. Eudelsie Rodney-Swimmer.
Quiz Master was Ms. Deonne Caines, also of CFNI, while the judges were Mrs. Janice Archibald-Maison, Dr. Audrey Morris, with Technical Assistant being Ms. Deborah Henningham of the CFNI.
Chairing the programme was Ms. Kimberley Ashby-Mitchell, PAHO/WHO Consultant, Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), headquartered in Jamaica. The welcome and opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Fitzroy Henry, Director of CFNI; and Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education Guyana, Mr. Olato Sam delivered brief remarks. Also in attendance were other senior officials from the Ministry of Education and related agencies.
Yesterday’s was the 15th Annual Caribbean Schools’ Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition sponsored by PAHO/CFNI, intended for Fourth and Fifth form students preparing for the Caribbean Schools Examination Council (CSEC) exams.
Meanwhile, on hand to witness the competition and lend moral support to the two teams were hundreds of secondary school students, drawn from more that 12 secondary schools in Guyana, along with their class teachers.
