Campaign Manager warns…

PPP/C will not tolerate behaviour contrary to law
THE People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will not tolerate or encourage anyone being engaged in behaviour that is contrary to the law and the party’s principles surrounding a free, open and fair elections campaign, Executive Member and Campaign Manager, Robert Persaud said Tuesday.
Speaking at a media briefing at their Freedom House headquarters, he gave the undertaking while addressing concerns raised over a recent incident involving party member, Kwame McCoy.
It had been reported that McCoy, allegedly, gun-butted 50-year-old Clifton Stewart, of Norton Street, Lodge, also in Georgetown, last Friday night, during a fracas over the erecting of political posters in that city ward.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and it was also raised with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
As to what, if any, sanctions will be imposed at the party level, Persaud said: “We have made it   clear, if anyone is found behaving contrary, we have internal mechanisms and sanctions and we will not interfere with the course of law or justice, if that person has broken the laws of Guyana.”
He acknowledged the report to the police and said the PPP will be awaiting the results of the investigation.
Persaud explained that whenever such an incident is reported, once it concerns a member of the PPP, that individual is called in and a statement is taken.
He said on the very night of the alleged occurrence involving Mr. McCoy, several PPP volunteers were also harassed in the same area.
According to Persaud, incidents such as these “conveniently” escape the attention of the media.
“I hope that these incidents are also pursued,” he said.
In his address at the Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, rally on Sunday, President Bharrat Jagdeo warned that anyone found inciting violence, expressly around this time, will be dealt with by the law.
“You promote violence and we will lock you up,” the Head of State cautioned.
Meanwhile, McCoy,  in his defence via a letter published in yesterday’s edition of this newspaper, said there is a carefully orchestrated plan by the opposition and their media ‘jumbies’ to make him a target for harm and a victim of physical attacks, especially since his return to television as host of ‘Square Talk’.

“The opposition/media collaboration continues in an intense and evil effort to tarnish my character, resorting to all sorts of fictitious stories using opposition supporters in their theatrical series,” McCoy stated.

In doing so, he said they are hoping that the contagion of scorn, disgust and revenge would prevail against him.

“I am fully aware of the PNCR/APNU’s desperation over the last few weeks and their preference to provoke a confrontation as means of dodging elections on November 28. My Guyanese brothers and sisters can rest assured that the opposition will not get their way on this front,” McCoy stated.

“I am too focused on working to secure another PPP/C victory on November 28 and do not intend for those in the PNCR/APNU collection of geriatrics and their media ‘jumbies’ to distract me from that goal which will be beneficial to all Guyanese,” McCoy added.
